Visa's Irish Consumer Spending Index, which measures expenditure across all payment types (cash, cheques and electronic payments), revealed that Irish household spending rose +2.5% year-on-year in August, with the rate of expansion unchanged from that seen in July. Household spending has now seen an increase year-on-year for the past six consecutive months.

The rate of growth in consumer spending in Ireland slowed for the second month running in November, according to the latest data from Visa's Irish Consumer Spending Index. Expenditure across all payment types (cash, cheques and electronic payments) increased +3.9% year-on-year, the weakest expansion for a year-and-a-half, slower than the +4.4% rise seen in October this year.

Spending was up +11.3% year-on-year across all payment types (cash, cheques and electronic payments), faster than the +7.5% seen in January and the steepest recorded in the 18-month series history, surpassing the previous best from November last year.

The latest Visa Europe Irish Consumer Spending Index showed that there was no slowdown in consumer expenditure in January after a year-on-year increase of +7.2% was recorded during the month across all payment methods.

The latest Visa Europe Irish Consumer Spending Index signalled a strong end to 2015 for the Irish economy as total household expenditure rose +6.6% across all payment methods from one year earlier. The December performance completes a particularly strong final quarter of 2015 for consumer spending with +7.1% growth over the same quarter in 2014.
