Short courses in Hospitality: Haaga-Helia's top experts share their knowledge in Estonia

On October 6 th Haaga-Helia Hospitality Competence Center in Estonia opened the delivery of their own short courses, with the first of a 2-day short course in Hospitality Industry Managerial Accounting. It was delivered by the coach Timo Saranpää, M.Sc.(econ.), and assisted by Elisa Aunola and Sven Lööndre.

The course covers the issues of Profitability management, Profitability planning, Budgeting and investment planning and Operational key figures.

The coach believes that, for a hotel and restaurant (etc.) manager, it is vitally important to understand the nature of the operational actions and their linkage with figures – and vice versa; hence, the goal of the course is to help the participants improve their financial performance within the Hospitality Industry.

Timo has been working as an entrepreneur in the hospitality industry for 20 years. He has built up a chain concept for catering and a new marketing concept for the group travel market. All these years, Timo has shared his experience and knowledge through his consulting and a lecturing business for hospitality industry managers and entrepreneurs.

Timo Saranpää

Timo's fields of expertise are management accounting and business development. Timo has written a few books, e.g. Official Management Accounting Instructions for the Association of Finnish Travel Agents (SMAL) and The Finnish Hospitality Association MaRa.

Timo's strength is the ability to combine theoretical and practical finance skills with management know-how.

Timo is the chairman of The Finnish Business Schools Graduates (Suomen Ekonomit) and a board member in various organizations.

The Revenue Management short course was a big success

After the first two short courses (in October "Hospitality Industry Managerial Accounting" by the Timo Saranpää in November „Demand Management for Hospitality Leaders“ by Jere Talonen) the short course delivery continued with the course “Principles and Practices of Hospitality Revenue Management" on November 17th and December 3rd delivered by Nina Niemi.

Latvia, a project in motion

Within its global mission Haaga-Helia entered Estonian market last year, and has now been preparing for entering Latvia as the next option in the Baltic Sea Region. At present there are 4 different missions on the table, in the form of cooperation, with: the Latvian Hotel and Restaurant Association, the Latvian Medical Tourism Cluster, the City of Jurmala, and the City of Riga/Live Riga.

Lean Management, a key to success

The Lean Management short course “Lean Management as quality and operations management tool in hospitality” by Jalmari Eklund on February 18th and March 3rd was executed with a great success meaning that the participants, who came to the first day being not aware to the full extent of what Lean is all about, started their second day with great enthusiasm.

Tallinn FoodFair showcased Haaga-Helia Hospitality Competence Center

​The 16th Tallinn FoodFair (TFF) - an internationally recognized source of trade opportunities for food-related industries - from hotels, restaurants and catering services to retailers, importers, producers – was held in Tallinn on October 28-30.

Haaga-Helia participated at the 16th Tallinn FoodFair (TFF) in Tallinn on October 28-30 and among other activities drew lots at the fair stand in order to award one participant in the end of the event with a free AHLEI (American Hospitality & Lodging Education Institute) online course delivered via Haaga-Helia as the certified AHLEI provider in the region.

The Second Hospitality Insiders Club Estonia was Innovative & Trendy

​The second Hospitality Insiders Club Estonia held on November 25th at Restaurant NEH in Tallinn focused on innovation and trends in hospitality industry. The keynote presentation on how trends influence the tourism and hospitality industry was delivered by the expert Dr Pasi Tuominen (Haaga-Helia UAS).

Latvia, next in Haaga-Helia's radar?

​Ain Hinsberg was invited by the ​Latvian Hotel and Restaurant Association to participate on behalf of Haaga-Helia UAS/Haaga-Helia Hospitality Competence Center in Estonia. The event was held on November 17th, at the associations annual conference in Riga. Hinsberg's role was to present Haaga-Helia's activities in Estonia and the options for launching some similar ones in Latvia.

Short Courses in Estonia are Mission Accomplished!

Haaga-Helia Hospitality Competence Centre in Estonia delivered successfully 6 short business courses during the pilot study year 2015/16. The events – mostly 2-days per course - were held at the EBS main building and the average number of participants per course was around 15. All in all, over 25 participants were present during the exciting opening year.

Estonian Hospitality Insiders Club – Mission Completed!

Haaga-Helia Hospitality Competence Centre in Estonia delivered successfully 4 Hospitality Insiders Club events during the pilot study year 2015/16. The same format has been run in Finland by Haaga-Helia for 3 years now successfully. The events – 1-day per club meeting - brings together managers and experts from the hospitality field from all over Estonia.
