Army Veterans in Wind: #3 From UK Armed Forces to Wind

We have collected a series of inspiring stories about GWS colleagues who all joined the wind industry with a military background.

In our third story, we meet Rob from our American unit who transferred from the UK Armed Forces to a career in wind.

Background: Former Military Personnel in Wind.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, there are more than 10,000 veterans currently working in the wind industry, making up 9% of the total workforce. It's the second fastest-growing job in America. Meanwhile, in Europe, there is a need for at least 150,000 more workers in the wind industry, aiming to grow the current workforce of 300,000 to over 450,000 in the next 8 years.

Wind turbine technicians are crucial in the wind industry today. However, as demand increases, there's a shortage of skilled technicians. At Global Wind Service (GWS), we believe it's our shared responsibility in the industry to bring in new colleagues from other industry to grow the workforce.
One way we do this is by helping people from other industries with transferable skills, like the Military, transition into roles in the wind industry.

At Global Wind Service, we're proud to have a strong team of ex-military professionals. They bring valuable skills and experience to various roles, from technicians to back-office positions. We are highly committed to supporting ex-military personnel as they move into civilian careers. In the UK alone, over 14,000 personnel leave the military each year. That's why we take part in events and job fairs to offer guidance and help them explore new career opportunities.

#3 From the UK Armed Forces to a thriving career in wind

Meet Rob, the Sales Director for the US at Global Wind Service. Rob used to work in the military before shifting to the wind industry. He wanted a career that matched his adaptable skills and offered growth opportunities. Rob started as a technician at a small ISP in the UK, learning about wind turbine operations and maintenance.

Joining Global Wind Service in 2021 was a game-changer for Rob. The company's good reputation and focus on progress provided a supportive and collaborative environment that aligned with his values and goals.

Rob began at Global Wind Service as a Sales Manager in the UK, then became the Area Manager for GWS UK while still handling sales. By mid-2023, Rob became the Sales Director for the US division, moving to Dallas with his family to lead the company's growth in North America.

Reflecting on his transition from the military to the wind industry, Rob values how his military experience shaped his career. Skills like discipline, work ethic, leadership, and adaptability from his military background have been crucial in navigating the wind industry. Working with diverse teams and setting clear goals helped build strong relationships and achieve shared objectives.

Rob acknowledges Global Wind Service for playing a significant role in his career growth. The company's supportive culture, combined with his dedication, honesty, and adaptability, paved the way for his success. Rob is grateful for the opportunities he's had, demonstrating the potential of military veterans transitioning into the wind sector.

To fellow veterans interested in the wind industry, Rob advises:

"Prioritize networking, continuous learning, and seize opportunities for professional development.

Networking opens doors and drives growth, while being proactive and adaptable leads to success in the industry. With adaptability and a proactive mindset, military veterans can thrive in the wind industry.

So go out there, network, and see for yourself the possibilities awaiting you!"
