New UNESCO Global Geopark: The Fjord Coast Regional- and Geopark Joins the World’s Natural Treasures
The Fjord Coast Regional- and Geopark designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark
A new international recognition for Norway’s west coast – and a milestone in geoscience and local development
UNESCO has officially designated The Fjord Coast Regional- and Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark, recognizing the site’s international geological significance and its strong community-driven approach to conservation and sustainable development.
Located on the rugged west coast of Norway, The Fjord Coast Regional- and Geopark, also called Fjordkystparken is the country’s first combined regional- and global geopark. It is considered one of the best places in the world to study the full life cycle of a mountain range – with visible traces of the ancient Caledonian orogeny, a geological event that shaped large parts of Europe hundreds of millions of years ago.
But the park is more than rocks and ridgelines. It represents a living landscape, where geology, coastal culture, and local livelihoods are deeply interconnected. The park is a grassroots initiative, developed and sustained by over 85 active members and partners, including municipalities, businesses, NGOs, and local citizens.
- A UNESCO status confirms that we have world-class geology, but we would never have achieved it without the strong collaboration we have, says Trude Søilen, General Manager of Fjordkystparken.
The Fjord Coast Regional- and Geopark is located within the Fjord Coast & Sunnfjord destination, just north of Bergen. Here, the distances between unforgettable experiences are short – making it easy to explore more in less time.
- A UNESCO status is of great value to the entire region. It highlights a world-class natural heritage, inspiring efforts to preserve our nature and cultural legacy. Gaining UNESCO status also paves the way for greater visibility of the many exciting nature and cultural experiences we have to offer, says Marita Solheim, General Manager at Visit The Fjord Coast and Sunnfjord.
What makes this UNESCO global geopark unique?
Geology of global importance: The landscape bears witness to deep time and ancient mountain-building processes.
Cultural continuity: The traditional "fisher-farmer" way of life is still alive here, shaped by the sea, seasons, and self-reliance.
Local engagement: The park was built from the ground up, through collaborative efforts across sectors and generations.
Knowledge and storytelling: The park connects science and culture – with an emphasis on education, outreach, and identity.
Why you should visit
- Wild Sheep Safari: Get up close with the hardy old norse sheep that shape the landscape and maintain ancient grazing traditions.
- Immerse yourself in authentic West Norwegian culture and flavours – from the millstone quarries in Hyllestad, to the poetry of Jakob Sande, and the culinary experiences at Leonards Forlaavelse.
- Island Hopping by the postal Boat: Travel the old postal route between the islands – meet the locals, hear their stories, and see life at the edge.
- Lighthouse Safari to Utvær: Venture to Norway’s westernmost point – a historic lighthouse at the edge of the North Sea.
- Mountain Hikes with a Story: Climb iconic peaks like Alden (the Norwegian “Horse”), Lihesten, who once lay in a deep valley, high up in the Caledonian mountain range, and Storehesten – each with its own legend and breathtaking views.
About UNESCO Global Geoparks

Fjordkysten Regional- and Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark, is set to become the fifth UNESCO Global Geopark in Norway – and the third one located in Fjord Norway. The two others are Magma Unesco Global Geopark and Sunnhordland Unesco Global Geopark.
