Freedom - Free forms of light.

Press release -

Freedom - Free forms of light.

The dream of being able to “write with light” is old. But technology and the design of light sources have made it difficult to implement in practice.

“Anyone who wanted to create free forms of light has basically been constricted to neon, and it is hardly an option for efficient general lighting”, notes Fagerhult's product manager Peter Björkman.

But the advent of LED technology has changed the rules. For the first time, professional lighting designers have the ability to draw their own line of light. In collaboration with Professor Julle Oksanen and architect Weikko Kotila, Fagerhult has developed Freedom – a modular luminaire that can be composed in varied lines and patterns.

Freedom is built around two different modules; one straight and one curved – in any combination. Both modules measure 1200 mm and the curved module also has a radius of 1,200 mm. The solution is based on the mathematical duodecimal system which has left many traces in architecture. Divided or multiplied, the number twelve creates harmonious spatial proportions.

Freedom comes in three models: suspended with two different light distributions, ceiling-mounted as well as a wall mounted luminaire. All models provide the same freedom for creating exciting line-patterns in the air, on the ceiling or on the wall.

Freedom is not primarily a decorative solution. As always with Fagerhult, light treatment and energy efficiency are the first priority, says Peter Björkman:

“Freedom provides a high level of general lighting that does not require any complement. And even if LEDs are the key to freedom of form, they also make great demands on the lighting technology. By combining an innovative internal reflector with an opal louvre, we have managed to create comfortable lighting without any glare or blinding light. Lighting plans with Freedom allow you to leave aside the technology and enjoy the creative process!”
