Recent developments in work–life balance in Finland

The European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS), carried out by Eurofound every four years, explores a variety of aspects related to living standards, health, family and work–life balance, as well as people's happiness levels, satisfaction with their lives, and their perceptions regarding the quality of their society.

The latest survey results for Finland paint a generally positive picture of the country in 2016, just a year before the country’s 100th anniversary of its independence. Finland came out on top of the 28 EU Member States on several indicators: happiness, optimism about children’s future and the quality of education, to mention just a few. This no doubt reflects the fact that the economic and social development of Finland during the 20th century has led to an exceptionally high quality of life in this Nordic country – a cause for celebrations, indeed.

However, the EQLS 2016 results regarding work–life balance reveal that combining life and work in Finland today is proving quite challenging – and the findings are especially worrying for women and people in the lowest income quartile...

Quality of life improving in Europe, but progress undermined by persisting inequalities and growing uncertainty

Results from Eurofound’s 2016 European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) show general progress in the three key areas - quality of life, quality of society and quality of public services. Nevertheless, there remain signs of persisting inequalities and rising uncertainties in some areas with particular differences apparent between countries, gender, age and income groups.

Optimism about the future is up in the EU, but in some countries there are concerns for younger generations

People surveyed about their optimism for the future in Eurofound’s European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) were more optimistic about their own future in 2016 than they had been about the future in general in 2011. This growth in optimism can partly be attributed to the improved economic situation in Europe since 2011.

People on lower incomes in Europe economising on food to make ends meet

People in the lowest income quartile in the EU are going without fresh fruit and vegetables to save, and a higher proportion are buying cheaper cuts of meat or buying less meat because of money concerns. This practice is occurring throughout Europe, but there are vast differences between Member States.

On 8 March 2018, Eurofound and the European Economic and Social Committee, under the banner of the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU, will bring together up to 80 representatives of the social partners, EU institutions, national and regional representatives, civil society, and academics in Brussels to debate the key themes highlighted in Eurofound’s European Quality of Life Survey 2016.
