The Spanish Tourism Institute and Netflix launch "Spain Travel Guide" and a short film contest to highlight the diversity of Spain through fiction
● The guide covers the 17 autonomous regions and shows the cultural, environmental and local leisure richness through stories.
● In addition, both entities have presented the short film contest “How would you say it is Spain without saying it?”, aimed at inspiring students to create stories that highlight the diversity of Spanish cities and towns.
The growth of audiovisual productions in Spain has brought people from all over the world closer to the culture, heritage and wealth of our country. Assuming that great stories are a great way to travel, the Spanish Tourism Institute (Turespaña) and Netflix have presented the "Spain Travel Guide" (a mosaic of stories that make up the essence of the country) in the Mugaritz space and the contest audiovisual “How would you say it is Spain without saying it?”. Both initiatives emphasise how Spanish fiction promotes the Spain Brand at an international level.
The guide, prepared in collaboration with ETHIC and the General Directorate for the Food Industry, covers the 17 autonomous regions and the two autonomous cities through the stories and protagonists of each corner of the country. “Spain Travel Guide” proposes an itinerary that includes the cultural, environmental and leisure wealth of Spain, in addition to its historical heritage. In a map format, it allows you to discover how the traditions (such as crafts, music or agriculture), the lifestyle and the capacity of the Spanish society to offer unique experiences, are reflected in many of the series and films produced for Netflix in Spain.
The central axis of this guide are the testimonies of the inhabitants themselves, thanks to whose stories a diverse tourism is discovered. Throughout its sections, a territory full of contrasts between its cities and its rural environments is reflected, where culture, gastronomy, historical heritage, fashion, nature or sports are presented as surprising alternatives for those who want to explore the country in a different way.
The Spanish Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, has highlighted "that the collaboration between Turespaña and Netflix through this guide allows promoting film tourism that not only contributes to enhancing the settings in which the productions are shot, but rather reinforces, through the characters, the emotions and the experiences lived while traveling virtually or in person. By watching Netflix series and films we discover Spain, its landscapes, its traditions and, above all, its people. An exciting country with infinite stories, ancient traditions, modern, cheerful, monumental, diverse and creative. A country with a lot of talent.”
“How would you say it is Spain without saying it?”, an audiovisual contest to value the diversity and uniqueness of the Spanish territory
Turespaña and Netflix have also advanced the launch of the contest "How would you say it is Spain without saying it?". The contest, open to students from higher education centres, film schools and universities (which have audiovisual, film or image and sound studios), will encourage participants to create stories in audiovisual format inspired by values and attributes of Spain and offer an approach that highlights the diversity and uniqueness of its territories, cities and towns.
Thus, the scripts must highlight the principles of sustainable development, through at least one of the three pillars set forth by Turespaña: territory, people and heritage. The jury will especially value the authenticity of the stories, promoting tourism that is not based on a single season of the year in concentrated areas, but that extends throughout the year and in areas less known by traditional tourism.
About the collaboration agreement: a link between two strategic industries:
The two initiatives presented are part of the collaboration agreement between Turespaña and Netflix, signed in June 2021, for the design of new tourism products around the audiovisual industry. In this way, the link between audiovisual production in Spain and tourism is strengthened and it contributes to the recovery of the country, reinforcing the Spain tourism brand and expanding knowledge of the richness and cultural diversity of our country. The guide and the contest are added, thus, to the promotional video "How would you say it is Spain without saying it?", which showed some of the most iconic corners of our geography, our culture and our lifestyle through fragments of the films and series produced by the service in Spain.
