Arlington High School Teacher Returns from Aiducatius Internship in The Gambia

[Arlington, MA, July 18, 2024]

Adam Gooder, an art teacher at Arlington High School, has just returned from an extraordinary experience participating in the Aiducatius Creativity Internship at St. Martin’s School in The Gambia. This unique internship, funded by Educatius and its charitable arm Aiducatius, an international exchange organization, highlights the impact that Arlington High School has on the globe through its partnership with Educatius for 15 years.

Educatius Partnership and Impact

Educatius enrolls talented international students on F-1 visas from around the world at Arlington High School, contributing to the school's vibrant community. Tuition payments from these students contribute to school activities. These international students living with caring Arlington host families, who receive a monthly stipend and the backing of Educatius’ 20 years of experience. Hosting an Educatius student not only introduces a new culture into an American family’s home but also supports Aiducatius' initiatives, such as aiding St. Martin's School in The Gambia. There are still opportunities to host students from Europe, Asia and Latin America in Arlington this fall!

Aiducatius Creativity Internship

The Aiducatius Creativity Internship at St. Martin’s School recently concluded, leaving a lasting impact on all participants. The internship aimed to inspire students through artistic activities and fostered a deeper connection with the community of Kartong. The internship team comprised of teacher Adam Gooder (Arlington), host mom Tara Creed (Utah), student alum Serena (Italy), and student alum Norun (Norway), each contributing their unique energy and creativity to the program.

Experiences and Contributions

During their time in The Gambia, the team engaged with students in various drawing and painting exercises, fostering individual creativity with a more American style approach. The students’ enthusiasm, creativity, and joy were evident, as they proudly showcased their artwork.

The team also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture. They were welcomed to a local family home for the Feast of the Sacrifice, sharing a traditional dish and communal dining customs. The children of Kartong were fascinated by the visitors and enjoyed having their pictures taken.

Additionally, the team explored local attractions and culture, including a sacred crocodile pool, a monkey sanctuary, and an encounter with a Kankourang, a local entity believed to chase away evil spirits.

One of the significant contributions of the team was working with older students to paint a mural celebrating school spirit. They also provided art supplies and materials that will benefit students for years to come.

A Lasting Impact

The Aiducatius Creativity Internship has profoundly impacted both the participants and the community of Kartong. Since 2009, Aiducatius has been supporting students at St Martin’s School, and this internship is a testament to Educatius ongoing commitment to fostering cultural exchange. As an African proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go long, go with others.”
