New CCS partnership connects ports, pipelines and platforms

Copenhagen, 21 June, 2024 - Imagine a future where ships dock at The Port of Fredericia loaded with captured CO₂ to be stored safely and permanently in the Danish North Sea. This is the ambition of a new partnership agreement launched today between TotalEnergies Denmark, Evida and Associated Danish Ports (ADP), which supports national CO₂ reduction targets and plans for CO₂ capture and storage.

The partnership aims to develop transportation solutions for captured CO₂ with the Port of Fredericia and Taulov Dry Port as key transit points to be connected via pipelines to the storage sites in the North Sea.

Geological studies show that Denmark's underground is an ideal place to store captured CO₂. Its central geographical location in Europe also makes it possible to help our EU neighbors reduce their emissions by using the CCS facilities. However, it is crucial that infrastructure is developed to transport the CO₂ to storage sites on the necessary scale.

It is essential if we are to reduce emissions and reach the Danish and global climate targets, says Martin Rune Pedersen, Country Chair of TotalEnergies in Denmark:

"CCS is a bridge to future climate solutions. TotalEnergies has been working with CO₂ storage globally for many years. Now we are initiating efforts in the Danish part of the North Sea, and with our Bifrost project we aim to store 5 million tons of CO₂ annually from 2030. A strong transportation infrastructure is essential to achieve that goal. With this partnership, we are taking the next step towards developing the backbone of our future offshore CCS industry, not least thanks to our skilled partners Evida and ADP."

Last year, TotalEnergies Denmark and Evida agreed to explore the possibilities of establishing an onshore CO₂ pipeline infrastructure in Denmark.

"The new partnership is a natural extension of this. The justification and value of a CO₂ pipeline infrastructure for Denmark increases the more people can use it and the larger the amount of CO₂ it must transport. It is Evida's declared goal to create an open infrastructure with high utilization, where access is made available to everyone with a need for CO₂ transport," says Kim Søgård Bering Kristensen, CEO of Evida.

Fredericia as a CO₂ hub
The infrastructure development must be in place when TotalEnergies Bifrost storage facility is ready to store CO₂, which is expected to happen in 2030. The goal is to establish a pipeline, the so-called "North Sea link", connecting the Fredericia area with the West Coast of Jutland, where offshore infrastructure will be used in the further transportation of the CO₂ to the storage facility in the Danish part of the North Sea. Taulov Dry Port will be able to receive and transport CO₂ via trucks and rail, which can then be led into the pipeline infrastructure.

"In collaboration with EVIDA and TotalEnergies, we are positioning and supporting Denmark as a pioneer in massive CO₂ management. In ADP, we see the new collaboration as a very exciting addition to our core activities, where we also contribute significantly to achieving the Danish climate targets. Fredericia is centrally located in Denmark and acts as the most important multimodal transportation hub. With a connection to the North Sea via the West Coast of Jutland, Fredericia will be one of the most important hubs for green infrastructure," says Rune D. Rasmussen, CEO of ADP.

The possibility of connecting other relevant areas with the infrastructure will also be considered. Especially in relation to connecting the Port of Esbjerg with the offshore infrastructure to facilitate the storage of CO₂ imported to the port in the Danish part of the North Sea.
