Solid GB4 Debut for Luca Magnussen
Despite a dramatic ending, Luca Magnussen made a strong start to his campaign in the British GB4 Championship, which kicked off this weekend at Donington Park.
Luca Magnussen made his debut in the British GB4 Championship, delivering a solid performance in the opening round of the season. The 15-year-old Dane, one of the youngest drivers in a 25-car field made up of both rookies and experienced single-seater racers, qualified 19th on the grid for the weekend’s first race. There, he managed to gain four positions, crossing the finish line in 15th place – a result he repeated in the second race, where he started 18th and again finished 15th.
Magnussen continued to show promise in the weekend’s final race. Starting from 18th, he had worked his way up to 14th when contact with a competitor in the final corner before the finish line sent the Fortec Motorsports driver off track and into the barriers. That brought an early end to the weekend for the young Dane, who fortunately walked away from the incident unharmed.
“It was a really disappointing end to what looked like being my best race of the weekend. That aside, it’s been a good weekend—challenging, but good. I knew it was going to be tough, because even though I felt well-prepared, I’m up against some extremely talented drivers, many of whom have several years of experience in single-seaters,” said Luca Magnussen.
“So, our goal was to finish all the races and gradually build up speed. I pulled off some good overtakes in the first two races – and again in the final, where I was closing in on the top 10 – but unfortunately had to retire. It wasn’t the way I had hoped to end the weekend, but I still take away a lot of positives from Donington, and I’m super excited to get back in the car again.”
The next round of the GB4 Championship takes place on April 26–27 at the iconic British Formula 1 circuit, Silverstone.
