CarbonCuts ansøger Energistyrelsen om licens til at udforske muligheden for at etablere Projekt 'Ruby' - et CO₂-lager i Rødbystrukturen på Lolland

Kgs. Lyngby, 24. januar, 2024. CarbonCuts A/S har i dag ansøgt Energistyrelsen om tilladelse til at udforske den geologiske Rødbystruktur på Lolland med 'Projekt Ruby'. Ansøgningen følger efter Energistyrelsens opfordring til interesserede operatører om at søge licens til at etablere CO2-lagre i fem danske områder som staten har udvalgt. Med dette skridt cementerer CarbonCuts sin ambition om at etablere et af landets første CO2-lagre og bidrage til at nå Danmarks klimamål. Samtidig overdrages CarbonCuts fulde ejerskab til BlueNord, ligesom bestyrelsen styrkes. Visionen er at kunne lagre omkring 1 mio. tons CO om året fra 2030 med potentiale til at starte lagringsaktiviteterne endnu tidligere.

Projekt 'Ruby': Ideel kombination af geologi og geografi
Projekt 'Ruby' er mere end blot et CO₂ -lager; det er en vision, der omsætter Danmarks geologiske fordele til praksis. Med beliggenhed i Rødbystrukturen, en 20 km lang og 10 km bred underjordisk formation på land, er projektet en unik mulighed for sikker og effektiv CO₂-lagring.

I dag er en stor milepæl for os. Vi har længe vist vores interesse i at etablere et CO-lager i Rødby og har arbejdet intenst på at definere projektet og forberede ansøgningen gennem måneder”, fortæller Ken Wesnæs, grundlægger af og administrerende direktør i CarbonCuts.

Som et led i forberedelserne, har CarbonCuts gennem det seneste år været i dialog med både myndigheder, politikere, lodsejere, borgere og andre i Rødby-området. Med Business Lolland Falster som central aktør, handler dialogen om hvordan forskellige sektorer og industrier kan samarbejde om og samskabe lokal grøn omstilling. Borgerdialogen er også vigtig, CarbonCuts ønsker at øge dialogen med borgere om CO₂-lagring og lokale grønne projekter, mens Energistyrelsen over de kommende måneder beslutter, hvem der får licensen.

”Nu er ansøgningen indsendt, og vi vil gerne fortælle mere om vores ambitioner og planer til alle interesserede, herunder borgerne i Rødbyområdet. Mange kender ikke meget til CO- lagring, så der er meget at tale om”, fortæller Wesnæs og uddyber: ”Rødbystrukturen er naturens gave til os. Set med geologiske øjne, er den perfekt til CO- lagring, og placeringen ved Østersøen er ideel til at hjælpe både danske udledere og Danmarks naboer i kampen mod klimaforandringer," forklarer han.

Strategisk transport og modtagelse af CO

Projektets placering tæt på Rødbyhavn understreger det internationale potentiale. "Vi planlægger at modtage CO via tankskibe, hvilket åbner døren for et bredt spektrum af samarbejde med lande omkring Østersøen med begrænsede muligheder for at lagre CO₂,” siger Wesnæs. Tilgangen sikrer, at CarbonCuts kan spille en central rolle i regionens klimaindsats, især for industrier, der står over for store udfordringer i deres omstilling til grønnere alternativer.

CarbonCuts' tilgang til CO₂-lagring er ikke kun begrænset til traditionelle kilder, for lagring af biogent CO₂ er også en mulighed, f.eks. fra biogasanlæg. ”Med biogen lagring kan vi opnå 'negativ CO -udledning' og det er en spændende mulighed, der kan accelerere vores fremskridt mod en mere bæredygtig fremtid," tilføjer Wesnæs.

CarbonCuts overvejer flere metoder til at modtage CO₂ via tankskibe til Rødbyhavn, herunder direkte levering til kaj, via en specialbygget pram nær havnen eller på en pram fortøjet til en bøje længere ude til havs. CO₂ kan også ankomme via tog eller lastbil. Med støtte fra Den Maritime Fond undersøger CarbonCuts allerede brugen af en stor pram som mellemlager før CO₂ pumpes ned til permanent lagring i undergrunden.

Ejerskifte og styrket bestyrelse

Siden sin etablering har CarbonCuts været støttet af BlueNord, som har en betydelig tilstedeværelse i de danske Nordsøaktiviteter gennem sit ejerskab i Dansk Undergrunds Consortium (DUC). Efter indsendelse af licensansøgningen overgår CarbonCuts til at være et fuldt ejet datterselskab af BlueNord og vil derfor fortsat nyde godt af den fulde finansielle og tekniske støtte fra sin eneste aktionær. "Vi er bevidste om den vigtige rolle vi spiller i Danmark, og CarbonCuts er en fantastisk mulighed for BlueNord til at drive strategiske og effektive bæredygtighedsaktiviteter. Ruby-projektet er afgørende for både klimaet og Danmarks CO₂-lagringsambitioner, og vi ser frem til at gå videre med CarbonCuts i en stærk position som fuldt medlem af BlueNord-gruppen," siger Euan Shirlaw, administrerende direktør i BlueNord.

CarbonCuts udvider også sin bestyrelse med Maj Wendorff, en erfaren geolog og leder fra olie- og gasbranchen, tidligere statsgeolog ved GEUS, og nu Head of Market Energy and CO₂ Storage hos Rambøll. "Majs dybdegående viden er meget værdifuld for vores arbejde med CO -lagring. Og med BlueNords fulde ejerskab og Majs ekspertise, er CarbonCuts stærkt positioneret til at drive Danmarks CO lagringsindsats,” understreger Wesnæs.

Fremtiden for Projekt ’Ruby’

Etablering af et kommende CO₂-lager kræver omfattende planlægning, både detaljeret kortlægning af undergrunden og analyse heraf. Det kræver også undersøgelse og beregning af forskellige teknologiske scenarier i forhold til, hvordan infrastrukturen bedst indrettes og optimeres med fokus på både økonomi og bæredygtighed.

Mens CarbonCuts forbereder sig på de næste faser af 'Ruby', herunder seismiske undersøgelser som ventes gennemført næste vinter hvis CarbonCuts vinder licensen, forbliver fokus fast på målet: at lancere en bæredygtig lagringsløsning med tilhørende infrastruktur, der kan bidrage til indfrielse af Danmarks CO₂ mål og tjene som inspiration for CO₂-lagring globalt.

CarbonCuts applies to the Danish Energy Agency for permission to explore the possibility of establishing 'Project Ruby'
– an onshore CO
storage facility in the Rødby Structure on Lolland

Kgs. Lyngby, January 24, 2024. CarbonCuts has today applied to the Danish Energy Agency for permission to explore the geological Rødby Structure on Lolland with 'Project Ruby'. This application follows the Agency's invitation to interested operators to apply for licenses to establish CO storage in five areas selected by the state. With this step, CarbonCuts reinforces its ambition to establish one of the country's first CO storage facilities and contribute to meeting Denmark's climate goals. Concurrently, CarbonCuts transfers full ownership to BlueNord, and strengthens its board. The vision is to store about 1 million tons of CO per year from 2030 with the potential to start the storage activities earlier.


Project 'Ruby': Ideal combination of geology and geography

Project 'Ruby' is more than just a CO₂ storage facility; it is a vision that translates Denmark's geological advantages into practice. Located in the Rødby structure, a 20 km long and 10 km wide underground formation on land, the project presents a unique opportunity for safe and efficient CO₂ storage. "Today marks a significant milestone for us. We have long shown our interest in establishing a CO storage facility in Rødby and have worked intensely on defining the project and preparing the application for months,” says Ken Wesnæs, founder and CEO of CarbonCuts.

As part of its preparations, CarbonCuts has been in dialogue over the past year with authorities, politicians, landowners, citizens, and others in the Rødby area. With Business Lolland Falster as a central player, the dialogue has focused on how different sectors and industries can collaborate and co-create local green transition. Citizen dialogue is also important for CarbonCuts, which aims to increase discussions with citizens about CO2 storage and local green projects while the Danish Energy Agency chooses the licensee over the coming months.

"Now that the application is submitted, we want to share more about our ambitions and plans with all interested parties, including the people living in the Rødby area. Many are not familiar with CO storage, so there is much to talk about,” says Wesnæs, elaborating: "The Rødby Structure is nature's gift to us. Geologically, it's perfect for CO storage, and its location by the Baltic Sea is ideal for helping both Danish emitters and Denmark's neighbours in the fight against climate change," he explains.

Strategic Transport and Reception of CO

Ruby’s location near Rødbyhavn highlights its international potential. "We plan to receive CO via tankers, which opens the door for a broad spectrum of cooperation with countries around the Baltic Sea with limited options for storing CO₂," says Wesnæs. This approach ensures that CarbonCuts can play a central role in the region's climate efforts, especially for industries facing significant challenges in transitioning to greener alternatives.

CarbonCuts' approach to CO₂ storage is not limited to traditional sources, as storing biogenic CO₂ is also a possibility, for example, from biogas plants. "With biogenic storage, we can achieve 'negative CO emissions,' an exciting opportunity that can accelerate Denmark’s progress towards a more sustainable future," adds Wesnæs.

CarbonCuts is considering several methods to receive CO₂ via tankers at Rødbyhavn, including direct delivery to the quay, via a specially built barge near the harbour, or on a barge moored to a buoy further out at sea. CO₂ could also arrive by train or truck. With support from the Danish Maritime Fund, CarbonCuts is already investigating using a large barge as an intermediate storage before CO₂ is pumped down for permanent storage underground.

Strengthening the ownership and the board

CarbonCuts has to date been supported by BlueNord, who has a significant presence in Danish North Sea activities through its ownership in the Danish Underground Consortium (the “DUC”). Following the submission of the license application, CarbonCuts has become a wholly-owned subsidiary of BlueNord and will continue to benefit from the full financial and technical support of its sole shareholder. "CarbonCuts provides a fantastic opportunity for BlueNord to drive strategic and effective sustainability activities, recognising the important role that we have to play in Denmark. The Ruby project is crucial for both the climate and Denmark’s CO₂ storage ambitions, and we look forward to moving forward with CarbonCuts in a strong position as a full member of the BlueNord group", says Euan Shirlaw, Chief Executive Officer in BlueNord.

CarbonCuts also expands its board with Maj Wendorff, an experienced geologist and leader from the oil and gas industry, former state geologist at GEUS, and now Head of Market Energy and CO₂ Storage at Rambøll. "Maj's in-depth knowledge is very valuable for our work with CO storage. With BlueNord's full ownership and Maj's expertise, CarbonCuts is strongly positioned to drive Denmark's CO storage effort," Wesnæs ends.

The Future of Project 'Ruby'

Establishing a future CO₂ storage facility requires extensive planning, including detailed mapping of the subsurface and analysis of the geological data. It is also vital to examine and calculate various technological scenarios concerning how the infrastructure is best designed and optimised, both sustainably and economically.

As CarbonCuts prepares for the next phases of 'Ruby', including seismic surveys expected to be conducted next winter should CarbonCuts win the license. The focus remains firm on the goal: to launch a sustainable storage solution with accompanying infrastructure that can contribute to fulfilling Denmark's CO₂ goals and serve as an inspiration for CO₂ storage globally.
