Press release -
NEW ELEPHANT PARADE ANNOUNCED FOR RIVER CITY BANGKOK
Elephant Parade’s global celebrations of its 10th anniversary continues this month when a herd of thirty-three of its brightly coloured elephant statues arrive at River City Bangkok for a new four-week public art exposition, to raise awareness of and funds for Asian elephant conservation.
This exciting new event is being presented by River City Bangkok and the “Elephant Parade By The River” will launch on 10 August and run until 3 September 2017. The art piece designs that have been created by artists and celebrities will appear at RCB Artery, 1st Floor, River City Bangkok.
These baby elephant sized statues are for sale with 30% of the net profit going toward conservation projects run by charity Elephant Family. Miniature replicas are also for sale at the ground floor of River City Bangkok with 20% of the net profit going towards efforts to protect the Asian elephant.
One of the parade’s signature art pieces - named “Nam” (which means “water” in Thai) - will be hand painted at the opening reception on 10 August by female celebrity Namfon Patcharin. This initiative supports the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) campaign “Women’s Journey Thailand” which promotes a wide range of activities for women travelers from around the world.
Jürgen Brüske, Director at Elephant Parade said: “River City Bangkok is renouned for its exquisite collection and celebration of arts and antiques making it the perfect host of our handcrafted uniquely designed elephant statues. Art lovers, collectors and passers by can marvel at the elephant shaped masterpieces which through art aim to raise awareness of the need to ensure that the prescious, now endangered, Asian elephant’s future is secure.”
Linda Cheng, Managing Director of River City Bangkok said: "Being the Anchor of Arts, Antiques and Cultured Lifestyles, River City Bangkok is proud to work with Elephant Parade to present 33 colorful elephants symbolising our 33rd year of promoting art & antiques in Thailand. Both companies are passionate about being responsible social entities through art, so what better way than having fun admiring these beautifully crafted and hand-painted elephants!"
The Elephant Parade concept was founded by Marc and Mike Spits after they visited the Friends of the Asian Elephant hospital in Thailand, which treats sick and injured elephants. There they saw Mosha, a baby elephant who lost part of her foot when she was only seven months old and became the first elephant to receive a prosthetic limb. Mosha is fitted with a new leg every year. Elephant Parade is committed to Mosha at Friends of the Asian Elephant Hospital through an annual donation of at least one million Thai Baht. For the last decade, Mosha has featured in every Elephant Parade exposition around the world, symbolising the endurance to overcome adversity, a conservation theme close to Elephant Parade’s heart.
Since the very first parade in the Netherlands in 2007, thousands of artists and public figures have supported Elephant Parade to raise awareness for elephant conservation. More than 1,500 elephant designs have been created, each an original piece of art. Famous international supporters of Elephant Parade include; Sir Richard Branson, the Duchess of York, Evelyn de Rothschild, Goldie Hawn, Khloe Kardashian, Katy Perry, Tommy Hilfiger, Paul Smith, Joanna Lumley, Michael Palin, Ricky Gervais and Prince Henrik of Denmark.
