Tom of Finland emerges at the top during the Male Form Sale in Brussels
Untitled (Panel 6 from Sex in the Shed), 1975 by Tom of Finland (1920-1991) sold for €44,800 against an estimate of €20,000 to 30,000 at Bonhams Cornette de Saint Cyr in Brussels on Tuesday 25 June 2024. Four other lots by the artist achieved strong prices far ahead their pre-sale estimate such as Untitled (Panel 6 from Sex in the Shed), 1975 sold for €20,480.
Florent Belivier and Valentine Naslin, heading up the sale in Brussels, commented: “European and international buyers were particularly interested in erotic drawings by Tom of Finland. Classical works of art such a beautiful torso by Auguste Rodin and a bronze by Constant Ambroise Roux achieved strong prices. Once again, this edition of Male Form paid tribute to the universal beauty of the male body.”
Other highlights included:
- La colère d’Achille by French sculptor Constant Ambroise Roux (1865-1942) sold for €32,000 against an estimate of €3,000 to €5,000.
- Male torso also known as torso n°748, executed around 1880-1885 by Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) sold for €24,320. 22.8 cm high bronze version with a dark brown patina, cast by the Fonderie Émile Godard in 1980, is a study for the Torso of the Centaur from the Gates of Hell.
- The Recliner, 2022 by the Irish artist Ian Brennan (born 1983), sold for €25,600
- Sarah Lucas (born 1962), Beer Can Penis, 1999, sold for €15,360.
- Nu d'Homme,Toni Kina by Salvador Dali (1904-1989) is a 1966 red chalk drawing on paper with a surrealist drawing on the reverse sold for €15,360.
