£100 raised through Sip for Stroke at Elms Nursing Home

The Elms Nursing Home in Bembridge hosted a ‘Sip for Stroke’ to raise funds for the Stroke Association on the 12th February 2015.  Stroke survivors, their friends and family and staff from the home got together to celebrate Life after Stroke.

The Nursing Home team provided a lovely selection of home-made cakes, organised a raffle and ‘Name the teddy’ competition. The event was a great success and raised a total amount of £100.

Esme Mutter, Area Manager for the Stroke Association, said; “Our team work closely with a number of Nursing Homes across the Island and it is great to have their support with our fundraising,”

The Stroke Association supports stroke survivors across the Island through two services; an Information and Advice and Communication Support:

  • The Information, Advice and Support Service offers emotional support, practical advice and information to stroke survivors and their close network to manage the impact of stroke. It can provide links to local organisations and services and opportunities for peer support
  • The Communication Support Service works with stroke survivors in various settings to help improve their communication and conversation skills. Individuals are offered opportunities to increase confidence and develop friendships. The service is supported by a team of trained volunteers

The Elms Nursing home has welcomed working with the Stroke Association.  The Communication Service has supported stroke survivors with aphasia at the home through regular conversation sessions and individual one to one volunteer support. All of the support has helped to create a stroke community and facilitate peer support.

To find out more about the Stroke Association services you can contact the Isle of Wight team on 01983 898301or email iow@stroke.org.uk.  To find out more about stroke you can visit www.stroke.org.uk.
