Press release -

Passenger compensation - a statement from Southern

Articles have been published in national newspapers stating that rail companies pocket compensation from Network Rail and pay out a much smaller sum to passengers in compensation for their delayed journeys.

Payments from Network Rail to train operators under Schedule 8 are completely unrelated to payments made to passengers in compensation for their delayed journeys and should not be compared. Passenger compensation is entirely separate.

Schedule 8 payments from Network Rail compensate us for many things including loss of revenue now and in the future through the loss of customer goodwill, the cost of rail replacement buses, passenger taxis and staff overtime. There is no provision for passenger compensation as part of these payments.

We have made it easier than ever to claim compensation through Delay Repay at stations online, via our app - On-Track - and when major delays occur, we make both audio and visual announcements at our stations and on our trains. At key destination stations, our staff also hand out leaflets advising people how to claim.

If your journey has been delayed for 30 minutes or more - regardless of the reason, you are entitled to make a claim for compensation. Please visit our Delay Repay page for details.
