Wheelchair weigh scales unveiled at Bury Library

A set of wheelchair scales has been unveiled at Bury Library to provide accessible ways for local wheelchair user residents to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The scales are the first of their kind in Bury, and they are free to use, with no appointment or referral needed.

They feature a digital display screen that users can take a picture of to record their weight, plus handrails and a folding seat for those with some mobility to manoeuvre themselves onto.

Councillor Tamoor Tariq, cabinet member for adult care, health and wellbeing, said: “This is a fantastic addition for the residents of Bury. It is so important for wheelchair users that they have free access to the equipment that will assist them with their health and wellbeing.”

Alan Norton (aged 76), from Tottington, provided feedback and said he’d like more venues to have the same provision.

He said: “There are very few places where you can weigh yourself in a wheelchair. Without it, if you’re on a diet you haven’t got the enthusiasm or motivation to know if it’s working.”

Bury Library is open Tuesday-Saturday and is wheelchair accessible, with local transport links nearby and parking for blue badge holders outside. User instructions have been placed next to the scales.
