Bridge over the River Roch!

Work is about to start on building a new bridge over the River Roch in Bury.

The single-span bridge will be near Redmere Drive, approximately 30m north of the existing Gigg Mills Bridge, a privately owned bridge that has fallen into disrepair and long been declared unsafe.

The new bridge will provide a crossing over the river for pedestrians, cyclists, horses and the occasional 3-tonne (max.) vehicle. It will be supported on piled reinforced concrete bank seats abutments, have a span of 41.58m and a clear square width of 3.79m between parapets.

Initial ground works are due to start on Monday (10 Oct).

There will then be a break in site operations while the superstructure (bridge deck and parapets) is fabricated, with work restarting in spring 2023. It is envisaged works will be completed and the bridge opened to the public in late spring/early summer 2023.

To minimise noise disruption, hours of working will be limited to 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and 9am to 2pm on Saturdays. It is not envisaged there will be any traffic disruption as a result of the works.

The project is being funded by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) from the Mayor’s Challenge Fund, set up to promote cycling and walking throughout Greater Manchester.
