As the world now slowly opens up and we can soon travel again, there is strong demand from passengers and airlines for the possibility to get PCR and antibody tests and have travel certificates issued at the airport. Swedavia has signed an agreement with ExpressCare to set up a test center at Göteborg Landvetter Airport.
The German low cost carrier Eurowings sees opportunities in the Swedish market and is expanding its range of destinations on offer from the Öresund region and Malmö with a new air link to the capital of Kosovo and the country’s biggest city, Pristina.
Kiruna Airport is the first of Swedavia’s airports to introduce remote tower services. Starting Tuesday, June 1, air traffic at the airport will be managed from Stockholm Arlanda and the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration’s new remote tower centre. The plan is for three more Swedavia airports to start remote air traffic services before the end of 2022.
On May 31, the new Hotel Scandic Landvetter, located close to the terminal, will open at Göteborg Landvetter Airport. As a result, the number of hotel rooms at the airport will double and at the same time provide brand-new opportunities for various meetings and conferences at the airport itself.
Both Ryanair and Wizz Air continue to see new opportunities in the Swedish market and are expanding their range of destinations on offer from the Öresund region and Malmö Airport with new air links to the Balkans.
After pausing service last year due to the pandemic, Finnair is returning to Visby Airport and will launch a direct route between Visby and Helsinki during the summer season. The service will launch in late June, with three weekly departures on Thursdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
In April, nearly 369,000 passengers flew via Swedavia’s airports, an 89 per cent decrease compared to the number of passengers in April 2019, before the pandemic. Compared to April 2020, air travel increased, though from extremely low levels. Overall, air travel is still strongly limited and dominated by the pandemic.
SAS, Scandinavian Airlines, in conjunction with Swedish Lapland Visitors Board and Luleå Airport, has announced the launch of a new seasonal route for winter 2021-2, which will open a direct connection between London Heathrow and Luleå Airport.
Air Dolomiti, the Italian Airline of the Lufthansa Group, will set up operations in the Swedish market for the first time with a multileg service from the German hub Frankfurt to Ronneby and Kalmar on the south-east coast of Sweden.
The Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair continues to invest in the Swedish market by setting up a new base and launching some twenty new direct routes at Stockholm Arlanda Airport ahead of the 2021 winter season, in addition to two domestic routes to Gothenburg and Malmö. Ryanair continues to expand also at Göteborg Landvetter Airport and will also resume service to Malmö Airport.
Swedavia’s first quarter results were strongly affected by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on travel. During the period, travel at the company’s airports decreased 86 per cent, thus making it the fourth straight quarter that Swedavia has reported a loss. Operating profit was SEK -381 M. The company’s net revenue decreased 63 per cent to SEK 457 M (SEK 1,245 M).
In March, nearly 341,000 passengers flew via Swedavia’s airports, a 90 per cent decrease compared to corresponding pre-pandemic passenger levels in March 2019. Compared to March 2020, which was also greatly affected by the pandemic, the decrease was 74 per cent. Overall, air travel remains at historically low levels, and market prospects are still uncertain due to the course of the pandemic.
