Ten years ago today, on November 27, Qatar Airways landed for the first time on Swedish soil, thus establishing its presence in the Nordic market. Since it launched service, the company has flown some 668,000 passengers from Stockholm Arlanda. The carrier’s ten-year anniversary will be celebrated today with a number of surprises around the airport.
LFV, Air Navigation Services of Sweden, and the airport company Swedavia, have signed an agreement that establishes air traffic service (ATS) from a remote position at four Swedavia airports. Concerned airports are Kiruna Airport, Umeå Airport, Åre Östersund Airport and Malmö Airport.
Swedavia has been presented an award in recognition of their use of biofuel. The award was presented during the Airports Going Green Conference, in Dallas, Texas, and among other laureates were London Gatwick Airport and Chicago O'Hare International Airport.
Swedavia has signed a new concession agreement with Dufry AG, which will operate and develop the airport group’s tax- and duty-free shops for seven years. The value of sales in the shops is estimated SEK 8-10 billion during the contract period, and Dufry will make major investments to enhance the passenger retail experience at Swedavia’s airports.
In October, around 3,700,000 passengers flew to or from Swedavia’s ten airports – a five per cent increase compared to October 2016. International travel was up seven per cent, to 2,400,000 passengers. Domestic travel was up two per cent compared to last year, to 1,300,000 passengers.
The Nuance Group (Sverige) AB has been awarded a new service concession contract with Swedavia AB to run tax- and duty-free operations at Swedavia’s ten airports.
Today Ryanair starts operating two new direct routes from Kraków to Sweden. Consequently Ryanair is back at Malmö Airport, greater Copenhagen's second largest airport, and the Irish low cost airline is also adding a route to Göteborg Landvetter Airport. Passengers will be able to choose from three weekly departures from both Malmö and Landvetter to the second largest Polish city.
Air travel to and from Swedavia’s airports continues to grow. Traffic growth during the third quarter of 2017 remained strong, and during the period passenger volume increased 7.1 per cent compared to last year.
Over the weekend, SAS launched three new nonstop services from Stockholm Arlanda Airport. There will be weekly departures to Miami, Eilat and Madeira and the inaugural flights were celebrated at Arlanda.
easyJet continues to expand at Stockholm Arlanda Airport at a rapid pace. Two new destinations are now being opened, Bristol (Great Britain) and Basel (Switzerland). With this launch, Swedish travellers will now have access to six direct routes with easyJet.
Scandinavian Airlines continues to expand at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and in the summer of 2018 will launch four new routes to European destinations – Verona, Gazipaşa, Birmingham and Aarhus. SAS is also increasing the number of departures to popular destinations in southern Europe. In domestic traffic, SAS will re-establish non-stop service between Stockholm and Örnsköldsvik.
Three brand-new routes are being launched from Malmö Airport, greater Copenhagen's second largest airport, in time for the 2018 summer season. Travellers in the south of Sweden will be able to fly non-stop to three Meditteranean destinations. SAS opens a direct service to Malaga in March, and beginning in May, Primera starts non-stop routes to Palma and to Chania on the Greek island of Crete
