Participatory performance and performance as pedagogy in Marija Griniuk's MFA solo exhibition

Welcome to the exhibition Eclectic Terrain

Opening: 6 February at 4 pm in Trapphusgalleriet, Konstfack, Dialoggatan 7

Eclectic Terrain is Marija Griniuk’s investigation into different formats of documentation of participatory practises. She is working with participatory performance and performance as pedagogy. These practices are focused onsites of meetings between facilitators and participants. The experience of meeting is often lost in documentation. In the exhibition Eclectic Terrain the elements of Griniuk’s embodied performance spaces are being recreated as a total installation.

In the discussion raised by this installation she analyses the hierarchy of image versus the actual act of participation. The conventional ways of participation documentation is framed into video and photo documentation. The artist extends these formats in her time spent on one or many images in contemplation of each of them, while embodying the images into painting or video. The reflection over editing/s of one image culminates in her durational multi-layered oil paintings. In this particular exhibition Marija Griniuk is focusing on the question: What happens when I look at an image of my participatory project for (too) long a time?

The exhibition consists of the Terrain, the floor of the gallery, which is covered by the eclectic residues of Marija Griniuk's previous participatory performances; textile flags, painted in batik technique, which she often uses for her participatory performance spaces, video-documentation of the participatory performance project The Nomadic Radical Academy and her paintings; painted images of her participatory performances.

The exhibition goes on until 13 Febuary and is open 12 to 5 pm every day.
