Consat Telematics delivering real-time passenger information system for rural and regional NSW, Australia

Rural and regional New South Wales (NSW) bus passengers are about to experience public transport the Consat way following rural and regional bus fleets being fitted with the Consat Telematics System.

Known as the Transport Connected Bus (TCB) program, it will provide important vehicle tracking and passenger counting technology as part of the NSW Government's promise to provide quality services and infrastructure to growing NSW regional communities.

Driven by Transport for NSW (TfNSW), the TCB program will see Consat design, deliver and support the system. Phase 1 covering Bega, Coffs Harbour and Dubbo and over 285 buses, is nearing completion. Subsequent phases are planned with up to 3000 buses.

NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said, "The launch of this technology is a huge step forward for people travelling in regional areas. It shows our ongoing commitment to make public transport a first choice in regional parts of the state."

Echoing the Minister’s comments, Member for Coffs Harbour, Gurmesh Singh said, "Transport for NSW has partnered with CONSAT Telematics, a global leader in public transport telematics solutions, to deliver the vehicle tracking technology in collaboration with regional bus operators."

The project includes both on-board and back-office systems. The on-board MX4 computer and passenger counting technology is underpinned by solid performance in thousands of buses, trams, ferries, (even snow ploughs), in Canada, Sweden, Norway and United Arab Emirates. Consat will also provide TfNSW with the back-office central system to manage and monitor buses in real-time, including integration into other TfNSW systems and customer facing information channels.

Lachlan Mackay, Managing Director Consat Telematics Australia says "It's exciting to be entrusted with this project, and we recognise the importance of providing world leading passenger information technology to the communities of regional NSW. This future-flexible solution will improve the customer's journey by providing consistent and reliable timetable data, and real-time trip updates including passenger levels."
