Pat Metheny Unity Group - nytt album 31. januar

I fjor spilte Pat Metheny inn musikk med et band hvor tenorsaksofon sto i fokus for første gang siden 1980. Med Unity Band, bestående av Chris Potter (saks, bass klarinett), Antonio Sanchez (trommer) og Ben Williams (bass), endte Metheny opp med å vinne sin 20 Grammy Award. Nå har Metheny utvidet bandet med enda en musiker – mulitinstrumentalisten Giulio Carmassi, og endret navnet til Pat Metheny Unity Group.

Bandets første utgivelse Kin (←→) slippes på Nonesuch 31 januar, og reiser ut på en omfattende turne som inkluderer hele 5 konserter I Norge:

Metheny sier følgende om sin nye gruppe:

“The core quartet of Chris, Ben, Antonio, and me played more than 100 concerts over the year that followed the release of our Unity Band record. Over the course of that period, the band became one of those rare combinations of players where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts; it gelled in every way, and that just seemed to beg for expansion and further research.”

He continues, “Simultaneously, I had been itching to write using more of a lush and orchestrated kind of concept that went beyond the sonic limits of what a straight-ahead quartet might invoke. But I really didn’t want to lose the energy, focus, and intensity of what this band had developed. I wanted to take it further. If the first Unity Band record was a thoughtful, black and white documentary of four musicians in a recording studio playing, this record is more like the Technicolor, IMAX version of what a band like this could be—but with that hardcore thing still sitting right in the middle of it all.”

I løpet av de siste tre tiårene har guitarist Pat Metheny skilt seg ut fra mainstream-jazzen, med sin vilje til å utforske og viske ut skiller mellom sjangere og musikalske uttrykk. Hans katalog har vunnet hele 20 Grammy-priser i 12 forskjellige kategorier; trioinnspillinger, soloalbum, komposisjoner for Hollywood-filmer og duetter med store artister som Ornette Coleman, Steve Reich, Charlie Haden, Brad Mehldau og flere. Pat Metheny Group, som ble grunnlagt i 1977, er det eneste ensemblet som har vunnet Grammy for 7 utgivelser på rad.
