The exhibition "What joy to be a sculptor!" presents Swedish women sculptors between 1880 to 1920. As part of a pan-Nordic project between museums and researchers, the exhibition brings some of these sculptors back into the spotlight.

This spring’s exhibition, Swedish Grace, presents art, design, film and fashion from the 1920s. It is a period of transition that laid the foundations of modern society and an era full of tensions across the artistic spectrum.
The 2022 exhibition programme at Nationalmuseum offers a mix of older art, design, applied art, sculpture and photography.
The exhibition Scandinavian Design & USA examines how concepts and design from the Nordic countries influenced and shaped modern American design, and conversely how influences from the United States have influenced Nordic design. It is an international collaboration between the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Milwaukee Art Museum, Nationalmuseum and Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo.
During the summer you can see several exhibitions produced by Nationalmuseum at tourist destinations throughout Sweden. Among others, these include Lisa Larson at the Gustavsberg Porcelain Museum, Nordic Myths at Nationalmuseum Jamtli, Close to Nature at Läckö Castle and Migrants at Gripsholm Castle. Nationalmuseum itself is presenting the exhibitions Zorn – a Swedish Superstar and Snowcrash.
This summer, the exhibition Nordic Myths will be presented at Nationalmuseum Jamtli. The exhibition includes a number of works by artists such as Carl Larsson, Elsa Beskow, Ernst Josephson and August Malmström, all from Nationalmuseum’s collections.
Snowcrash began in the final years of the 20th century as an exhibition by a group of virtually unknown Finnish architects and designers, with the aim of making an impact in the international design world. The collection, which was established over the course of 1997 to 2003, is being exhibited now for the first time.
On 6 April, Nationalmuseum will open its major exhibition about the Swedish artist Anders Zorn. Visitors to the exhibition can experience the enormous breadth of his artistry. From watercolour portraits painted in London to the most famous motifs from Dalarö, via Paris and the USA and finally back to Mora in Sweden.
2021 Nationalmuseum will show the exhibitions Zorn – a Swedish Superstar, Snowcrash and Scandinavian Design and the United States, 1890–1980.
This autumn's exhibition at Nationalmuseum opens on 17 September and features French and Italian art from primarily the 17th century but also French and Nordic art until the turn of the 20th century. The exhibition shows how people's view of nature has changed through the ages and also addresses the many classical stories conveyed in the paintings.
Nationalmuseum is Sweden’s museum of art and design. The collections include paintings, sculpture, drawings and graphic art from the 16th century up to the beginning of the 20th century and the collection of applied art and design up to the present day. The total amount of objects is around 700,000. .
The emphasis of the collection of paintings is on Swedish 18th and 19th century painting. Dutch painting from the 17th century is also well represented, and the French 18th century collection is regarded as one of the best in the world. The works are made by artists such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Goya, Boucher, Watteau, Renoir and Degas as well as Swedish artists such as Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson, Ernst Josephson and Carl Fredrik Hill.
The collection of applied art and design consists of objects such as ceramics, textiles, glass and precious and non-precious metals as well as furniture and books etc. The collection of prints and drawings comprises works by Rembrandt, Watteau, Manet, Sergel, Carl Larsson, Carl Fredrik Hill and Ernst Josephson. Central are the 2,000 master drawings that Carl Gustaf Tessin acquired during his tour of duty as Sweden's ambassador to France in the 18th century.
Art and objects from Nationalmuseum’s collections can also be seen at several royal palaces such as Gripsholm, Drottningholm, Strömsholm, Rosersberg and Ulriksdal as well as in the Swedish Institute in Paris. The museum administers the Swedish National Portrait Gallery at Gripsholm Castle, the world’s oldest national portrait gallery and the Gustavsberg collection with approximately 45,000 objects manufactured at the Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory. Nationalmuseum also curates exhibitions at Nationalmuseum Jamtli and the Gustavsberg Porcelain Museum.
Nationalmuseum is a government authority with a mandate to preserve cultural heritage and promote art, interest in art and knowledge of art and that falls within the remit of the Swedish Ministry of Culture.
