In Significant Development, French President Officially Informs HM the King He ‘Considers Present, Future of Western Sahara Lie Within Framework of Moroccan Sovereignty'

Very recently, the French President, H.E M. Emmanuel Macron has addressed a letter to His Majesty King Mohammed VI in which he officially and clearly announced that:

  • He considers that the present and future of Western Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan Sovereignty;
  • He assured of the inviolability of the French position on this issue of national security for the Kingdom;
  • France intends to act consistently with this position both nationally and internationally;
  • For France, autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework within which this issue must be resolved;
  • France’s support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007 is clear and constant;
  • This plan now constitutes the only basis for achieving a just, lasting and negotiated political solution, in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

Considering the long-standing relationships between the two countries, France has a unique hindsight, it knows the case in depth, both historically and legally. Moreover, it knows better than anyone the authenticity of Morocco’s rights.

As a permanent member of the Security Council and a connoisseur of the Sahara Question, France's position in favor of Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces, which is part of a broad international dynamic driven by His Majesty the King to put an end to this artificial dispute, constitutes a significant development and a turning point to this end.

This recognition at the highest constitutional level of the State is particularly important because it contributes to regional peace and stability through the rejection of separatism and the fragmentation of nations.

With this decision, France is supporting the development of the Moroccan Sahara region and moving towards a solution, rejecting the policies of stalemate and the worst-case scenario that are mortgaging the future of the Maghreb.

Finally, while highly welcoming France's decision, Morocco considers it humbly not as a victory against anyone, nor a defeat for anyone but as a simple reflection of a historical truth and a legal legitimacy.
