European Innovators Launch GRAPHERGIA Project to Revolutionize Energy Harvesting in Textiles and Battery Technology

Aimed at redefining the integration of energy solutions into everyday life, GRAPHERGIA is set to transform how we use and store energy, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards a climate-neutral future. A consortium of 11 partners from six European nations, this ambitious 3.5-year project will receive €4.5 million under the banner of Horizon Europe's Graphene Flagship initiative.

The 2D-PRINTABLE project aims to integrate sustainable large-scale liquid exfoliation techniques with theoretical modelling to efficiently produce a wide range of new 2DM, including conducting, semiconducting and insulating nanosheets. They aim to produce over 45 new 2DM with properties ideal for electronics and photonics applications. 

In the process, 2D-PRINTABLE will demonstrate that 2DM are an indispensable material class in the field of printed electronics, capable of producing far-beyond-state-of-the-art devices that can act as a platform for the next generation of printed digital applications. 

The development of such innovative materials and processing techniques will contribute to high-performance printed electronics, in addition to reinforcing European leadership in the industry. 

2D-PRINTABLE plans to boost networking and cooperation among the projects within the Graphene Flagship initiative, thus assisting to establish Europe as a competitive leader within the field of 2DM technology.

The GIANCE project mission is clear: to design, develop and scale-up the next generation of cost-effective, sustainable and high-performance 2DM-based multifunctional composites, coatings, foams and membranes, to addresses a myriad of challenges faced by industries worldwide.

The applications for outputs of the project are vast and impactful. From revolutionising transportation through lightweight and durable components to enhancing energy efficiency in the hydrogen economy, their materials  can offer solutions to pressing societal and environmental challenges.

Looking ahead, GIANCE plans to focus on advancing manufacturing processes, optimising material properties and scaling up production capabilities. Through experimental investigations and pilot-scale demonstrations, they aim to accelerate the transition of 2DM technologies from research to market. 

To overcome expected obstacles, the GIANCE teams plans to leverage strategic partnerships offered through the Graphene Flagship ecosystem.

Graphene Flagship sails into Horizon Europe

Bringing together 118 academic and industrial partners in 12 research and innovation projects and 1 coordination and support project, the Graphene Flagship initiative will continue to advance Europe’s strategic autonomy in technologies that rely on graphene and other 2D materials. The initiative, which builds on the previous 10-years of the Graphene Flagship, is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. The 2D-Experimental Pilot Line, addressing the challenges of upscaling 2D material production processes for the semiconductor industry, is another key component of the Graphene Flagship ecosystem.
