China: Sino-Danish relations and green energy cooperation solidified with state visit to China

On 24 April to 28 April 2014 H.M. Queen Margrethe II and the Prince Consort of Denmark visited China on an official state visit. During this visit a new cooperation agreement between Denmark and China was signed and the Danish Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation was given a tour of China’s National Renewable Energy Centre while meeting with the Chinese Vice Minister of the National Energy Administration, Mr H.E. Liu Qi.

In the presence of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II and the President of China Mr Xi Jinping, the Danish ambassador to China, Mr Friis Arne Petersen, signed a new memorandum of understanding between the Danish Energy Agency and China’s National Energy Conservation Center on Thursday 24 April . The agreement targets energy efficiency regulation, particularly in the industrial sector, and Denmark will also contribute to the development and implementation of energy efficiency strategies at a national and local level.

China has already developed an industry-sector programme focusing on industries including steel, chemicals and cement; and Danish experiences can contribute to the further development of improved energy efficiency in the heavy industries in China. Furthermore, the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Building extended two existing co-operation agreements with China’s National Energy Agency and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development that focus on sustainable energy and green urban development

Sustainable economic growth through energy efficiency and renewable energy

The Danish Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation, Mr Mogens Jensen, met with the Chinese Vice Minister of the National Energy Administration, Mr H.E. Liu Qi at China’s National Renewable Energy Centre in Beijing. The Chinese Vice Minister, Mr H.E. Liu Qi, expressed great appreciation of the Sino-Danish cooperation on energy and he was happy to see that the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Building continues to prioritize China through the extension of the cooperation agreements. The Danish Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation thanked Mr H.E. Liu Qi stating that the appreciation of the cooperation was mutual. After meeting with Mr H.E. Liu Qi, the Danish Minister was given a tour of China’s National Renewable Energy Centre (CNREC).

CNREC covers a wide range of different areas within the energy sector and works to develop strategies, action plans and legislation that encourage the use of renewable energy in China. The Danish Energy Agency assists CNREC with expert advice to develop long-term energy planning for the Chinese energy sector by making a number of scenario studies showing how China can retrofit the energy sector to increasingly prioritize and use more renewable energy to ensure a sustainable economic growth.

State visit a historic event

When Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II and His Royal Highness the Prince Consort of Denmark paid a state visit to China from 24 to 28 of April it was a historic event. The royal couple was accompanied by a total of four Danish ministers; the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation, the Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries and the Minister for Higher Education and Science. The delegation of ministers also included the highest level of officials from Danish government ministries and agencies.

A trade delegation also took part in the four day programme, and the state visit resulted in more than 40 signed cooperation agreements between the two countries. Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark visited China in 1979 as the first western Head of State after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The Danish state visit to China in 2014 will mark the enormous economic and social development in China and the impressive development in the Sino-Danish bilateral relationship since then.
